Reno, Nevada

We walked around for a couple of hours, taking in the atmosphere, looking in most of the many shops. Even took the opportunity of having a crab appetizer from one of the many stalls which line the whole front of Fishermans Wharf and Pier 39.

On the way back to the hotel we made a brief visit to the famous “Alamo Square”, where all the old famous “San Francisco” houses are situated. Unable to take a ride on a cable car because there was too long a queue.

Day 4 To beat the traffic on route 101 into San Francisco and the normal ensuing snarl up where the 101 meets the Interstate 80, I decided on an early start for our trip to Reno Nevada. Was rewarded with a very pleasant drive through the Californian countryside and on up the Donner Pass to Truckee, where we stopped for a cup of coffee. A short while later we were in Reno and booking into the “Peppermill Hotel & Casino” ready for our three night stop in the desert.

The “Peppermill Hotel & Casino” in Reno NV

This hotel was fantastic in all respects, from the superb room to its many fine restaurants and incredible facilities. I cannot believe that I managed to book this for $39 a night. The first evening we decided to try the “Island Buffet” restaurant in the hotel, which is laid out in a tropical setting with fourteen separate serving stations each providing a different selection of mouthwatering dishes. Help yourself to as much as you want for $14.95 including drinks. Incredible value.
